Who is PIAA?

The Pet Industry Association of Australia (PIAA) is the only industry association in Australia representing the wide range of trading interests within the pet industry. Formed in 1979, (As PIJAC) PIAA continues to represent a broad range of pet industry operations as the peak industry body.
PIAA is an association that is owned and run by its members and operates as an industry support group for business operators in the commercial pet industry in Australia.
Membership is open to any registered business with an ABN regardless of its size, location or type of companion animal business operation.
PIAA’s membership is totally voluntary and comprises of business operations in every State and Territory in Australia. The diverse range of business enterprises include:   Catteries, Pet Shops, Distributors, Manufacturers, Veterinarians, Aquarium Industry, Pet Food Suppliers, Pet Care Services, Grooming Salons, Animal Trainers, Boarding Kennels, Hydro-Bath Operations, Home Care Pet Services, Livestock Dealers        
PIAA’s National Board of Directors is elected by the members from the current six categories of members, two Directors representing each category for a period of two years.

The whole Pet Care Industry is one of the largest and most economically important in Australia, directly employing 40,000 + Australians and has a current total expenditure of $4 + billion .

Pet ownership is a societal fact of Australian life and PIAA’s members have an important role in the supply of all types of companion animals and associated products to the public. PIAA’s main responsibility is to protect our member’s rights to trade. We are strongly committed to the promotion of responsible pet ownership and have a constant focus on animal welfare issues.
 As an association we work in co-operation and/or association with various Government Departments and animals welfare agencies within all states of Australia and to a lesser degree internationally. Creating an environment whereby our members can learn new systems and technology while embracing best possible practice. PIAA is totally committed to providing ongoing training opportunities and the accreditation of members.
 PIAA members follow a National Code of Practice that leads the world in best practice standards and an Accreditation Scheme that facilitates the recognition of best practice by peers, regulators and the community.
PIAA is self-funded, promoting self-regulation and committed to industry and Government endorsed education opportunities, thereby raising the standards for all Australian pet industry operations.
Due to over-regulation it is becoming more important that the operators within the Australian pet industry take greater control of their own destiny. As such, PIAA regularly makes formal submissions on pet industry issues at the request of government agencies and industry regulators.  PIAA is represented on many Government agency steering, advisory and consultancy committees around Australia.
